Program:

CREATIVE MENTORSHIP

"I never knew I could reconnect with art again. But with the right people (my mentor Amanda and Anthony), even pointing at a wall had meaning. An invisible sign with the words Trust the Process became my silent motivator, inspiring me to create amazing pieces that I am proud of."

— Lizzet, CMP Mentee 2024

"I enjoyed my time in the Creative Mentorship Program to the fullest. It was a great chance for me to open up my creative skills and it made me feel like I got my creativity back. I appreciate my mentor Bruklyn for the extra push when needed and I appreciate the encouraging words and supplies from Mr. Anthony. Thank you guys for everything!"

— Jalen, CMP Mentee 2024

The Creative Mentorship Program empowers high school students to discover and develop their creative voices and artistic skills through 20 weeks of dedicated work with a professional artist at Golden Belt. It also involves students with the local arts community through monthly group field trips and workshops, and provides the opportunity for a month-long exhibition in the DAG Gallery at Golden Belt.

Through this innovative arts education program, students and mentors work collaboratively to enhance their artistic strengths, express themselves creatively, and expand their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

This program is an annual collaboration between Student U and DAG that began in 2013. Student U is a community organization that uses the power of education, advocacy, and leadership to build a just and equitable Durham. Student U empowers and equips first-generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and educators to become the leaders that will transform our city.

If you have additional questions about the Creative Mentorship Program, please contact us at anthony@durhamartguild.org.

The Creative Mentorship Program is made possible through generous donations from the community.

"In my opinion having a supportive creative community is essential to any artist's overall success. Starting this community of support as early as possible can make a difference in whether a young person continues to pursue their creative goals. I'm so glad I got to be a part of the Creative Mentorship Program this year and contribute to the growth of a young artist, and the growth of a community among the students and mentors.

I really enjoyed being able to teach my mentee a new skill (hand sewing) that has brought many of my creative ideas to life in the past. It was exciting to see what she would create using the same basic materials. Sitting and chatting with her while practicing stitches reminded me of when I was first learning from my mother and aunts while trying to hem or repair pants." — Alexandria Clay, 2024 Mentor
