Vegetal Cloak by Patrizia Ferreira

“Byobu suspected, that what is important lies beneath the surface. That’s why he scratches, scratches for an open space, where he can reach a piece of soil without trees, without houses, without shells.” -Ida Vitale

In Vegetal Cloak there is an underlining theme of resistance and survival. Nature holds on by threads to surfaces, refusing to vanish, to be washed away. These vegetal al organisms like seaweed and moss, work slowly, microscopically even to over time carpet entire surfaces. Attaching themselves in such a way as to even choke the material they occupy, debilitating it, destroying it. However, the cycle never ends, nature continues its endless work, transforming itself, mutating, rebuilding itself from the rubble and debris. Humans’ actions are causing irretrievable damage all over the planet. Coastal areas are in peril of disappearing completely. In spite of it, Nature always wins. Acting quietly, imperceptibly, it will reclaim what belongs to her, recovering it forever.
