The Durham Art Guild presents Tedious World featuring new works by DAG member Carson Whitmore. Tedious World invites the viewer into a space that is just outside of the familiar. Using simple, repetitive processes, Carson constructs an exploratory universe of imagined public spaces. An homage to the act of making, Carson’s work reflects a period of an anxious consideration of individual and collective labor.
This exhibition is on view at the DAG Gallery at Golden Belt Campus December 3 – January 3, 2021. For the health safety of our community while in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this exhibition is only viewable by appointment with advanced notice. Carson Whitmore Artist Statement
I often return to meticulous processes as a way to enter into a productive creative space. My latest body of work, “Tedious World”, began as a meditative exploration of imaginary built environments. Simple painterly “brickwork” creates spaces that appear public and monumental. Entangled figurative forms inhabit these realms, captured in a moment of flux. The backdrop of COVID-19 adds a strange tone to the work—the tenuous forms and spaces resonating with the new, profound ways we are navigating the relationship between the individual and collective.
